The postgraduate MSc in Chemistry by research offers you the opportunity to carry out a research project in your chosen area of interest. You would work under the supervision of an academic member of staff alongside the rest of their research group. The MSc by Research is often a popular choice for those who wish to see if they are suited to a research programme, and can provide a valuable stepping stone to those wishing to embark on a PhD programme. Alternatively, if you do not plan to pursue a PhD, an MSc by Research is a valuable postgraduate qualification allowing you to specialise and develop your research skills further than other graduates.

All our research students participate in our innovative Doctoral Training in Chemistry (iDTC); a cohort based graduate training programme to develop and enhance your scientific, transferable and employability skills throughout your research programme. As an MSc by Research student you would have access to this training for the duration of your studies. An MSc by Research can be carried out full time over 12 months, or part time over two years.

Most MSc by Research projects are agreed between you and a supervisor who works in your area of interest. The research interests of all our academic staff are listed on our web pages – when you apply, you will need to give the names of those members of staff with whom you would be interested in working. If those staff members are interested in pursuing your application, they will contact you to discuss your interests further and identify a suitable project.
