Overview

An exciting PhD opportunity in the Future Mobility Group at the University of Newcastle, UK. You will work alongside our world-leading industrial partner, Siemens Mobility Ltd, in developing the next generation of traffic signals and traffic simulation tools.

You will look at state-of-art methods to produce ‘digital twins’ of signal controls within a suitable traffic micro-simulation tool, with a view to developing a robust approach capable of analysing and assessing the performance of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) and Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) in near future, smart urban environments.

Whilst the PhD is based at Newcastle University, you will also be embedded within Siemens Mobility, working alongside their researchers and practitioners, with industrial placement (minimum of 3 months per year) at Siemens Mobility Ltd, based in Poole, Dorset. You will have the opportunity to learn from them, working on cutting-edge software development, based around the AIMSUN micro-simulation model. You will bridge the gaps in existing approaches in simulating signal controls. An important aspect of the work towards the latter stages of the PhD, will involve testing the scalability of approach, and validation of the simulation in real-world conditions, for example, using existing C-ITS smart corridors in Newcastle.

Entry Requirements

You must have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent, in Engineering (esp. Civil, Electrical or Transportation Engineering), Mathematics or Statistics, Computing or Computer Science or a related subject or experience.

The award is available to UK/EU applicants only. Depending on how you meet the EPSRC’s eligibility criteria, you may be entitled to a full or a partial award.

Funding Notes

Full UK/EU fees (eligibility criteria applies to EU students) and annual living expenses from a base of £15,009 p.a. (full award-rising with inflation) topped up to £20,000 p.a. through funding by Siemens Mobility Ltd. Reasonable travel/accommodation support will also be provided by Siemens.
