100% of our Environment achieved world-leading and internationally excellent ratings – Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021
In our friendly Physics department, research spans experimental, applied, and theoretical physics, backed by grants from EPSRC, STFC, the EU, The Royal Society, HEFCW, and a range of industrial, charity, and government sources. The recently funded Sêr SAM scheme supported by the Welsh Government and the European Regional Development Fund, centres on the physics of advanced materials with low embodied energy, specifically for applications in optoelectronics and bioelectronics. Expertise lies in next-generation semiconductors, hybrid conducting electronic-ionic materials, as well as photodetection and solar energy.
Our state-of-the-art facilities include a low-energy positron beam with dedicated instrumentation for the study of positronium; continuous-wave and pulsed laser systems; scanning tunnelling electron and near-field optical microscopes; raman microscope; CPU parallel cluster; and the IBM-built ‘Blue C’ Super computer.

Professor Lyn Evans, leader of the Large Hadron Collider project at CERN, is a significant Swansea Physics alumnus, and Professor Higgs Boson, the Physics Nobel Prize winner who proposed the Boson particle is a Swansea University Honorary Fellow with close links to our department.
We have examples of students studying in CERN or gaining research internships within the department and our specialist courses stretch students into understanding the demands of research – whether that be in physics or closely aligned disciplines.
Physics at Swansea offers a wealth of opportunities. Our diverse community of postgraduate students and research staff, coupled with expertise across various domains and a commitment to championing equality, diversity, and inclusivity, fosters a dynamic and inspiring environment for your studies.
