The University of Essex was established in 1964, at the height of the counterculture. Our founding Vice-Chancellor, Sir Albert Sloman, set out to build “a new kind of university…where research really matters.” This commitment is still the heart of our mission.

Sixty years later, we continue to enrol innovative, talented people from all backgrounds into the Essex community. We want to give everyone an equal opportunity to excel in postgraduate education and that’s why we offer a range of scholarships, bursaries and studentships.

Scholarships and Bursaries

We offer a range of scholarships and bursaries for home, EU, or international students studying a research degree. Browse our scholarships, bursaries and country-specific funding opportunities.

We have several postgraduate studentships if you feel you learn better in a practical environment. Our studentships cover four faculties: Sociology, Health, Economics and Science. As a research student, you’ll work with at least one academic supervisor and receive training to help you gain skills in research methodology. We also offer a number of Doctoral training centre studentships that cover Social Science, Humanities and Environmental Science.

Proficio funding

Dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, all Essex research students will receive up to £2,500 funding towards training courses and conferences. After completing an introductory course, you will be registered to the Proficio scheme where you can take control and create the training journey that is best suited to you.

Alumni Discount

If you’re already an Essex graduate, you may also qualify for our Alumni Loyalty Discount with up to 33% off tuition fees for a year. This is available to students who have received a First or Distinction in their degree at Essex or one of our partner institutions.
