The MSc in Risk, Crisis, and Disaster Management offers distance learning to individuals interested in understanding and addressing the challenges of risks, crises and disasters. The course focuses on the growing threats to societies, including global warming, climate change, environmental disasters and terror threats. These incidents can cause significant disruptions in social, economic, financial, natural and physical aspects, with vulnerable populations often being the hardest hit. To minimise the impact of risks, crises and disasters, complex solutions are necessary.
This degree aligns with three United Nations frameworks: the Sustainable Development Goals (2015-2030), the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030), and the Paris Protocol (2015-2020). It aims to equip practitioners and responders with the skills to identify interconnections between these frameworks and implement sustainable solutions in complex situations.
The course adopts an interdisciplinary approach to improve practice. You will engage in various assessment methods, including individual assignments such as reflective essays and reports, as well as group work, including article reviews and emergency response planning.
Besides theoretical foundations, the course develops research skills and encourages active participation in global debates. You will learn to critically evaluate information, communicate effectively, analyse concepts, utilise information sources, interpret research findings, and devise innovative problem-solving approaches.
The course offers flexible learning through video lectures, Collaborate software for seminars, discussion forums on Blackboard, Skype meetings, and email communication. Online materials and collaboration with fellow students are part of the course. Support staff are available through the virtual learning environment and email.
