Benefits of studying a PhD

  • Make an original contribution to knowledge in your chosen discipline
  • Higher lifetime earnings – 3.5 years after graduation, 72% of doctoral graduate respondents were earning over £30,000 compared with 56% of master’s graduates and 22% of first degree graduates (who obtained good grades).
  • Increase access to higher level jobs or certain career paths. You may wish to embark on a doctoral degree as an enabling step towards a research-intensive career either in higher education or in the public or private sector.
