World-class teaching and world-leading research

As a postgraduate student at UCLan, you will experience high-quality, research-informed teaching by dedicated and well-qualified academic staff, who are often experienced industry or professional practitioners themselves. In 2010, UCLan became the first modern university to enter the prestigious QS World University Rankings and in the QS Stars Development Road Map, UCLan was awarded the maximum five stars for the quality of its teaching provision. UCLan offers a truly international experience – we have students and researchers from over 120 countries and over 125 partnerships with other institutions across the globe.

Employability skills

A focus on future employability is at the heart of our programmes – we work closely with employers, professional bodies and other organisations to ensure programme content keeps abreast of the latest industry and sector needs and that our graduates are well equipped for the challenges of the global marketplace. In many instances, our courses are accredited by professional bodies.

World-leading research with real-world impact

Research underpins everything we do at UCLan – being officially recognised as demonstrating elements of world-leading research in all 16 subject areas that were submitted to the latest Research Excellence Framework exercise. Research informs the curriculum of our postgraduate programmes, and our teaching teams include professors and researchers who are leaders in their fields.

We also work with some of the top businesses and organisations in the UK and around the world in collaborative partnerships. We have a reputation for applying our research in real-world situations, to help develop innovative solutions and technologies that have real impact.

UCLan is in Preston in North West England, a rich and culturally diverse place to study, as well as being one of the UK’s most reasonably-priced places to live. It is a buzzing, vibrant cosmopolitan city, with a wide range of shops, restaurants and bars, all within walking distance of the campus.

A £200 million Campus Masterplan is set to draw the city and campus even closer together, creating new green public spaces and improving access for pedestrians and cyclists. With traditional and contemporary shopping experiences, a thriving café culture and busy yet safe evening social scene, Preston also boasts beautiful parks, culturally-important museums and a thriving marina and docks area.

Good transport links mean the city is ideally placed for national and international travel: it is just over two hours from London by rail, one hour from Manchester and Liverpool, and their respective international airports, 20 minutes from the coast and one hour from the beautiful scenery of the Lake District.

State-of-the-art facilities

Our teaching facilities and resources are state-of-the-art, with modern buildings, accommodation and excellent facilities, including a pioneering virtual learning environment and an ultra-modern library and resources centre, offering contemporary study and research facilities.

In recent years, UCLan has invested over £100 million in new buildings and facilities to enhance teaching, learning and leisure activities: the £13 million Olympic-standard Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre; the £12.5 million JB Firth building, which houses the University’s renowned forensic science, chemistry and fire engineering courses; the £5.3 million Allen Building which includes the School of Dentistry and the School of Medicine; and the £15 million ‘Media Factory’ which incorporates state-of-the-art facilities for digital media and performing arts students and business incubator facilities. A state-of-the-art Engineering Innovation Centre, costing more than £30 million, is due to open on the Preston Campus in 2018.

Our award-winning library offers 24-hour access to computers and there is free Wi-Fi throughout the campus. We have a full range of support services for students including a one-stop student information centre; a free counselling service; a Medical Centre; a pre-school centre and a Multi-Faith Centre. Sport plays a major part in life at UCLan – we have nearly 50 teams in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) league.
