Research at Edge Hill

Edge Hill offers three routes into a research degree: MRes (Masters by Research), PhD (Doctor of Philosophy), and Professional Doctorate.

Our highly flexible MRes programme provides a short, intensive research experience in your subject area of interest. Students will undertake a research project to develop a range of transferable skills which will help with further research and prepare you for a PhD. Studying for a PhD will take three years, or up to six years part-time. In addition to submitting a written thesis you will need to demonstrate how your research has contributed to new knowledge or extended existing understanding. Alternatively, you can undertake a Professional Doctorate. Equivalent in status and challenge to a PhD, it is designed for professionals to advance their professional practice. To ensure prospective students are prepared for study at doctoral level, you can study a Postgraduate Certificate in Research.

On successful completion of a research degree students will be able to position themselves at the cutting edge of knowledge and will stand out in a highly competitive employment market. In a recent PRES survey (Postgraduate Research Experience Survey) 100% of postgraduate research students entered employment or higher education within six months of graduating from Edge Hill, highlighting our dedication to helping you succeed in your future studies and academic career.
