Based in the heart of Southampton on the UK’s south coast, Solent University is an open, friendly and inclusive university – with a diverse community of students from nations across the globe.

Taught courses

Solent offers a range of MA, MSc, LLM and MBA courses, covering everything from the creative industries, business and social sciences to maritime and sport. We also offer professional and part-time courses accredited by recognised industry bodies – providing the perfect opportunity to refine your subject knowledge and improve your job prospects. All our courses are designed with employability in mind, which makes industry-based learning our priority.

Teaching Excellence Framework – rated Gold

Our focus on practical knowledge and employment opportunities are just some of the reasons we’re rated gold in the latest Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) review from the UK government Office for Students. TEF recognises excellence in teaching, learning and achieving positive outcomes for students – with gold status awarded only to universities offering outstanding student experience and career outcomes.

Research

At Solent, our aim is to undertake innovative research that has a wide-ranging and significant impact on the experiences and learning of our students and on the lives of those in our local, national, and international communities.

Overall, in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, 34% of Solent’s research was assessed as world-leading and internationally excellent, and 50% of our research outputs were rated as world-leading and internationally excellent.

Solent in the city

Located in the centre of the UK’s south coast, the city of Southampton offers something for everyone ­– as well as excellent transport links across the south and to London, which is only 75 minutes by train. It’s a green city, studded with beautiful parkland and with the New Forest National Park right on its doorstep – not to mention the south coast’s exceptional yachting and watersports opportunities – there is a thriving culture of sports and outdoor pursuits in the city.

Southampton also has over 180 pubs, bars and nightclubs, with a vibrant music scene and a wealth of entertainment venues, theatres and exhibitions. It’s a fun and affordable place to live as a student.

Southampton is also a fantastic shopping destination, with big brands such as IKEA and Apple complemented by high street boutiques and independent stores. And the city’s historic walls are a powerful reminder of Southampton’s rich maritime heritage, alongside a wealth of museums, galleries and other places of cultural interest.

Solent University’s halls of residence are located in the heart of the city, all within walking distance of the university and city centre. Offering a range of post graduate accommodation options which provide wifi, 24 – hour residence support, and a chance to make new friends for life.

Focused on careers

Solent students have access to our dedicated careers advice and employability service – Solent Futures. The team are committed to getting students into great careers by offering impartial information, advice and guidance as well as placements to help you achieve your ambitions.

And this focus on careers is integrated into our courses. Modules include work-placement opportunities, briefs and projects based on real-world challenges, and practical assignments and assessments – alongside regular lectures, workshops and networking opportunities with alumni and professionals in relevant industries.

World-class facilities

Solent University is committed to investing in our already world-class facilities that our students and partners can benefit from.

Solent’s £33m Spark building is home to Solent Business School and Solent Law School, and combines interactive teaching spaces with lecture theatres and an atrium with social spaces. Central to the Spark building is the futuristic Pod, which has a full-size lecture theatre and open-topped breakout space.

Our £28 million sports complex has a huge range of sport and physical activity facilities – including flexible, affordable gym memberships and dedicated teaching spaces for sports-focused courses.

For sport science disciplines, we have one of the UK’s leading sport and exercise science facilities: our physiology laboratory is officially accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

For health related courses, students can use specialist nursing facilities including a nursing simulation suite, nutrition laboratories and biomedical science laboratories.

Our new art studios for creative arts, design and architecture have dedicated space which aims to encourage students to collaborate on projects which reflects the creative industries.

The media academy features cutting-edge production equipment, studio facilities and edit suites, including three green screen TV studios, a large TV studio with audience seating for up to 200, and a range of radio and music production facilities.

A recent investment of around £900,000 into a new virtual production stage is the latest film technology innovation made famous by Disney’s hit Star Wars show The Mandalorian and since featured in blockbusters like The Batman.
