The Department of Chemistry at the University of York is one of the UK’s leading Chemistry departments. Situated on an attractive campus close to numerous facilities and the beautiful city of York, the Department has seen significant redevelopment in recent years with new laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities for both research and teaching.

A large department, we have around 60 members of academic staff including numerous international prize winners, over 70 research fellows, more than 600 undergraduates and a graduate school of around 150 students studying for postgraduate qualifications. Departmental accolades include:

Research programmes

We offer the following research programmes:
PhD in Chemistry : 3 years full time / 6 year part time plus 1 year to write up
MPhil in Chemistry: 2 years full time / 4 year part time plus 1 year to write up
MSc by Research in Chemistry: 1 year full time / 2 years part time plus 3 months to write up

All our research students participate in our innovative Doctoral Training in Chemistry (iDTC) ; a cohort based graduate training programme to develop and enhance your scientific, transferable and employability skills throughout your research programme. We are also part of Doctoral Training Partnerships with other departments and institutions including NERC ACCE, NERC SPHERES and BBSRC White Rose.

Applications are welcome all year from students who are able to secure their own funding. A selection of projects is listed on our website, but applicants are welcome to suggest their own interest areas at the point of application. The research interests of all our academic staff are listed on our web pages.

UK Government Loans are available to eligible students for PhD study.
