Starting with the fundamentals, this course offers a comprehensive understanding of the varying levels of computer and network security. You’ll explore both the technical aspects and the logistics of planning and implementing network security management. Crucially, you’ll develop the skills to investigate systems after a breach.
Working individually and in teams, you’ll gain hands-on experience in penetration testing, threat analysis, and safeguarding everything from personal devices and corporate networks to large-scale cloud environments. You’ll also learn to use industry-standard tools and methodologies to identify vulnerabilities, protect critical infrastructure and implement robust defence strategies.
You’ll develop the confidence to communicate cyber threats clearly to non-technical stakeholders, bridging the gap between technical security measures and organisational needs. You’ll also gain a strong understanding of security frameworks, risk management and incident response strategies used by professionals across the industry.
Your studies will conclude with an individual masters project, where you’ll conduct in-depth research in an area that aligns with your interests. With Manchester as the UK’s largest tech hub outside of London, you’ll be well-placed to connect with a thriving digital community.
You can study our MSc Cyber Security course full-time over one year or with an optional industry placement year, extending its duration to two years. A placement is a great way to enhance your experience and expand your network. While it’s your responsibility to secure a placement, you’ll receive guidance from academic staff and the University’s Careers and Employability Service to help you find one that matches your goals.
