Masters Degree Description

The world’s habitats are changing rapidly, and climate change is driving species extinction at an unprecedented rate. This masters degree explores the science of conservation biology on a global stage.

From identifying ecosystems at risk, to conserving biodiversity and understanding the roles of genetics and demography, you’ll advance your skills and become an expert in the field.

You’ll gain a strong grounding in:

Species conservation
The sustainable use of resources
Statistical techniques for ecological analysis
Factors driving extinction
Crucially, the course combines theory with practical experience to prepare you for your future career. Core modules include an overseas field trip and a masters project where you’ll conduct and present an original piece of research.

With 100% of our research in ecology and environment rated world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021), you'll be taught by research-active academics with real-world experience.

The course is internationally focused to prepare you for a global career in conservation science. Whether your background is in biology, environmental science or a related field, you’ll graduate with the skills and experience to contribute meaningfully to one of the most urgent challenges of the time.

Entry Requirements

You’ll need a UK honours degree – normally a 2:2 – or the international equivalent, in a relevant subject. We might also consider your application if you have several years’ professional experience in a related field.

Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification.
