MSc Manchester City Sport Coaching and Performance

Masters Degree Description

This is a masters degree like no other. Taught and designed in collaboration with Manchester City Football Club, this course gives you an advanced, real-world understanding of how sport coaching impacts health, wellbeing and performance across elite and community settings.

Throughout the course, you’ll explore sport coaching as a force for performance, inclusion and social change. You’ll build the skills to navigate the emotional, political and relational dynamics of professional sport, while examining how sport policy shapes communities and lives. 

You’ll also learn to apply sport science to enhance athlete and team performanceUsing industry-standard toolsyou’ll analyse match and training data, interpret trends, and communicate insights that drive results.  

Your learning will take place across a range of world-class facilities, including our Institute of Sport building, Platt Lane Sports Complex, and Manchester City’s Etihad Campus. You’ll have access to: 

  • Indoor and outdoor sports pitches 

  • Strength and conditioning suites 

  • Performance analysis laboratories 

  • 3D motion analysis suites 

  • Advanced imaging technologies 

  • An environmental chamber 

A key highlight of the course is the work-based learning module, combining practical experience in both performance and community settings through structured placements with Manchester City. Alongside this, you’ll complete a research project, enabling you to investigate real-world challenges and contribute to the future of coaching and performance practice. 

Together, these experiences set you up for a high-impact career in sport, preparing you to lead with confidence in both interdisciplinary support teams and high-performance environments. 

Entry Requirements

You’ll need at least a 2:2 undergraduate degree or equivalent in a related area, including, but not limited to, Sport Coaching, Sport Development, Sport and Exercise Sciences, Data Analytics, or Health Sciences; or in an area of study accompanied by professional or personal experience. We may consider your application for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Accredited Prior Experience (APE) entrance if you have relevant, extensive professional experience in this field, even if you don’t have the required qualifications.  

IELTS requirements for international students are set at 6.5 with no element below 5.5. Further information for international students is available for applicants with non-UK qualifications is available at mmu.ac.uk/international
