Description

Mathematical Sciences – MSc Data Science courses

Why study at the University of Plymouth?

At the heart of our teaching philosophy is the desire to give you programmes that are driven by research-informed teaching and are at the leading edge in their fields. We want you to be hands-on with as much of our equipment as possible, to develop skills as well as knowledge. If you aren’t in the lecture theatre or the lab, you may well be in the field – we are lucky to have a location that supports our field-based programmes. If you are not on a field-based programme, you will still find the sea, the moors and the city to be very beneficial for social and leisure activities.

Mathematics

As a student of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Plymouth, you will explore profound and beautiful ideas and understand how they can be applied to the key challenges facing us as we progress further into the 21st century. At the same time you will develop both your logical and creative thinking. This combination of skills is one of the reasons why mathematicians are so valued in today’s economy. Learn in a research rich environment, supported by active researchers in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Theoretical Physics, with strong national and international links. We offer a range of postgraduate study opportunities including taught masters and research degrees, delivered in a research active environment where 78% of research outputs were graded as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the REF, 2021.

Facilities

We have invested in a new Engineering and Design Building, situated on the city-centre campus the landmark facility will transform the teaching capacity and research capability of our schools.

Dedicated to teaching and research, the facility will see STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) subjects come together to support academic collaboration and innovation.

Some of the facilities you’ll find in the new building are: DigiFab Labs, STEAM Labs and Composites Engineering Labs. To find out more, please see the website.

Employability

Britain is facing “explosive demand” for data science skills, according to Burning Glass Technologies analysis commissioned by the Royal Society. Demand for data scientists and data engineers tripled over the past five years, rising 231%. That’s much faster than job postings overall in the UK, which rose 36%, according to the report “Dynamics of data science skills.” Data science and analyst jobs are among the most challenging to fill, taking five days longer to find qualified candidates than the market average. Employers are willing to pay premium salaries for professionals with expertise in these areas.

We will give you skills in programming, statistics, machine learning, cleaning and manipulating data, and expertise in data visualisation. Presentations will strengthen your communication skills. As a graduate in data science and business analytics, you will then be in a prime position to pursue a wide variety of prestigious and extremely well-rewarded positions, which include – but are not restricted to – data analyst and data manager, research and business analyst, social media and business strategist, data scientist, and data engineer.
