The PhD in English is available on a full-time or part-time basis. The diversity of our staff’s research interests means that we are well-positioned to supervise research in any field of literature from the Middle Ages to the present day, including literature in languages other than English and literary works in translation. We also have distinctive expertise in practice-led teaching and research, including archival and historical work, and printing.
As you can see from our list of current students and recent graduates, we supervise thesis projects across all literary periods and genres. Our postgraduate students work in an intellectually invigorating environment, are supported by supervisors who are leaders in their field, and with structured meetings and feedback that allow them to fulfill their research ambitions.
We also offer the PhD in English as a Distance Learning option for students unable to reside full-time in York.
In order to apply for a PhD, we ask that you submit a research proposal as part of your application.
This is a self-funded programme.
