An interdisciplinary approach to climate and sustainability

The Climate, Innovation and Sustainability Policy MPA is uniquely designed to explore the complex relationships between climate change, sustainability, policymaking and innovation, both social and technological. Drawing on expertise from across disciplines, you'll develop the tools to understand and address sustainability challenges in just, inclusive and effective ways.

The programme's flexible structure allows you to tailor your studies through a wide range of optional modules across STEaPP and related disciplines. Alongside developing specialist expertise in climate and sustainability policy, you'll have opportunities to explore modules from other MPA pathways including health, urban, digital and development, creating a learning experience that reflects your interests and career aspirations.

Learn from leading experts

You'll be taught by academics and practitioners working at the forefront of sustainability transitions, climate governance and innovation policy.

In Term 1, you'll learn from Dr Bipashyee Ghosh, Lecturer in Engineering, Innovation and Public Policy. Her research focuses on innovation, sustainability transitions and transformative policy, with expertise spanning South and Southeast Asia and Africa. Through her teaching, you'll explore how societies can transition towards more sustainable, democratic and equitable futures.

In Term 2, you'll be taught by Professor Arthur Petersen, Co-Lead of the programme and Professor of Science, Technology and Public Policy. Alongside his role at UCL, Professor Petersen serves as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Dutch Delta Commissioner and has contributed to major international climate assessment processes, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). His teaching draws on decades of experience at the intersection of climate science, evidence and policymaking.

Learn through real-world experience

This MPA combines academic excellence with applied learning. Through a Group or Individual Project with policy, industry or research partners, you'll work on live sustainability and climate policy challenges, gaining valuable experience and developing practical skills sought after by employers.

Through the programme, you'll develop a deep understanding of the systemic challenges shaping energy, transport, food and water systems, and examine how innovation policy can support transitions towards sustainable futures. You'll critically assess the role of emerging technologies and socio-technical innovations, from electric vehicles to carbon capture and storage, in achieving climate goals while addressing issues of equity and social justice.

Who is it for?

The programme is designed for ambitious individuals who want to lead change in response to climate and sustainability challenges. Whether you're an early-career professional or looking to advance an established career, this MPA will equip you with the interdisciplinary knowledge and leadership skills needed to shape effective policy solutions.
