Description

The Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 awards some 35 postgraduate Fellowships and Scholarships a year, for advanced study and research in science, engineering, the built environment and design.

Masters

Industrial Design Studentships aim to stimulate design capability among the country’s most able graduates to the benefit of UK industry. The scheme is looking for candidates who are intending a career that will benefit UK industry and have obtained admission to, but not yet started, a suitable postgraduate course. This would normally be within the UK and lead to a Masters degree in design or in engineering with a particular focus on industrial design. Duration is one year. A second year will be supported if the course demands it and the first year has been satisfactorily completed. Students receive payment of their tuition fees up to the UK home level, a stipend of £13,000pa (plus £4,000 London Weighting where applicable) and an allowance of £850pa for materials.

Between 10-15 awards are made each year. Applications open in October of each year, and close in May, with the Studentship starting in September/October.

PhD

Industrial Fellowships provide funding toward university fees and salary for an individual to study for a PhD while working, linking cutting edge academic research with industrial scale to create new products and services. Duration is three years.

Between 10-15 awards are made each year. Applications open in July of each year, and close in February, with the Fellowships starting in October.

Postdoctoral

Research Fellowships give early-career scientists or engineers the opportunity to conduct research of their own instigation. Open to candidates intending to conduct research in any of the physicals or biological sciences, in mathematics, in applied science, or in any branch of engineering. Duration is three years.

Around 10 awards are made each year. Applications open in October of each year and close in January, with the Fellowships starting in October.

Fellowship in Design/Built Environment

These Fellowships alternate on a biannual basis and are aimed at professionals and those at a more advanced stage in their career to explore important current issues identified by the Commissioners. The Fellowships encourage research culminating in tangible outputs of practical significance with the potential to feed into policy. Duration is two years and funding of £100k is provided.

One award is made each year. Applications open in the summer and close in September, with the Fellowship commencing in December.
