Outstanding Facilities

Students at the School of Biosciences, Geography and Physics have access to a wide range of state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. For example, biosciences students may experience using The R.V. Mary Anning, a £1.3 million purpose-built 18-metre catamaran-class survey vessel which can carry 26 passengers to conduct research activities in Swansea Bay and further afield. It has a globally unique visualisation centre that displays multi-dimensional information from animal tracking data.

Geography students can benefit from using a fifteen dual-processor workstations for Earth Observation, a 20-node multiprocessor Beowulf cluster, and the Department’s IBM ‘Blue Ice’ supercomputer, which is mainly used for climate and glaciological modelling.

Physics students can have access to equipment such as a low-energy positron beam with dedicated instrumentation for the study of positronium; continuous-wave and pulsed laser systems; scanning tunnelling electron and near-field optical microscopes; raman microscope; CPU parallel cluster; and the IBM-built ‘Blue C’ Super computer.
