The School of Mathematics has an outstanding reputation in undergraduate and postgraduate education, and offers a wide range of undergraduate, MSc and PhD programmes. The School is a world-leading department, covering almost all aspects of Pure and Applied Mathematics, Operational Research and Statistics as well as Mathematical Education. The University of Edinburgh is one of the world’s top universities, consistently ranked in the world top 50 and placed 15th in the 2023 QS World University rankings. The University has an international reputation for innovative research across a wide range of disciplines and we are always working to develop innovative approaches to teaching in order to discover the methods that work best for students.

We are part of a longstanding collaboration between Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University in the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences. The Institute pools research from both universities to offer a research and postgraduate training environment that can attract the best mathematics talent from around the world.

The School of Mathematics offers fully funded PhD studentships each year. Students receiving funding are awarded a stipend equivalent to UKRI stipend rates for a period of 4 years plus fees. Scholarships are available within the following areas of research-
