Moving to London as an international student can feel overwhelming at first. Simple things like navigating public transport, adjusting to the weather, or even understanding local slang can take time. But gradually, you find your rhythm, discover your favourite spots, and build a community. London’s diversity, opportunities, and vibrant energy will begin to shine through.
Coming from Mumbai, my first impression of London was that it felt slow. The pace was gentler, the streets quieter. But over time, I began to appreciate this rhythm. I found joy in the calm of Bloomsbury’s bookstores, the serenity of walks along the Thames, and the comfort of cozy cafés that quickly became second homes.
In my downtime, I love visiting museums, catching a play, or exploring new neighbourhoods. There’s always something happening, like popups, exhibitions, street food festivals. And as someone from Mumbai, I found London surprisingly walkable, which has been a delightful discovery!
I wanted to make the most of my time here, and for me that meant travelling. London is incredibly well connected to the rest of the UK. Whether it’s a quick train ride to Oxford, a coastal escape to Brighton, or a visit to Bath or Cambridge, you can turn a single day into an enriching adventure.
Building a community
I was both excited and nervous about starting this new chapter in my life. I wondered if I would find people who understood my background, if I would feel at home in a city so far from everything familiar. But from the moment I arrived, I found spaces that welcomed me not just as a student, but as a person with a story, a culture, and a voice.
One of the first events I attended was the “Breakfast for International Students.” It was a simple gesture, a warm meal and a welcoming space, but it made a huge difference. That morning set the tone for what would become a deeply connected and supportive experience.
Soon after, I attended the “Breakfast for Women of Colour”, another initiative by the Students’ Union. It was empowering to be in a room full of women who shared similar experiences, challenges, and aspirations. We spoke about everything from adjusting to life in London to navigating academic spaces as women of colour. These early events helped me feel seen and heard.
Another meaningful part of my experience was connecting with the Indian and South Asian community at UCL. From Diwali celebrations to Bollywood movie nights, these events brought a sense of home to campus. I celebrated Holi at the UCL East campus, a vibrant, colourful day filled with food, laughter, and a sense of belonging. It felt like a beautiful bridge between my heritage and my new community.
One of my favourite memories was a spontaneous picnic in Regent’s Park with classmates from five different countries. We each brought food from our home cultures and shared stories. We each brought food from our home cultures and shared stories. , It captured the essence of what UCL means to me: academic minds, open hearts, and shared joy.
Scholarships and support
Coming to UCL was a dream I held close to my heart, but one that felt financially out of reach. I didn’t have the privilege of strong financial backing from my family, and without scholarships, this journey might have remained just that, a dream. I was incredibly fortunate to receive the Global Masters Scholarship and the India Excellence Scholarship.
Thanks to this support, I’ve been able to focus on my studies wholeheartedly, take on volunteering roles, and immerse myself in campus life without the weight of financial stress.
Finding a sense of belonging
Studying at UCL and living in London has been more than just an academic journey, it’s been a personal one.
I have found a vibrant and supportive community, a sense of belonging in one of the world’s most vibrant cities, and the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.
It’s taught me independence, broadened my worldview, and gifted me with memories I’ll carry for a lifetime.
