Description

At Solent University, our aim is to undertake innovative research that has a wide-ranging and significant impact on the experiences and learning of our students and on the lives of those in our local, national, and international communities. We pride ourselves on carrying out not only pioneering research, but also research that addresses real world problems. We offer opportunities to study for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in several areas.  All Solent's doctoral students are also part of our research communities within the Graduate School, department and research theme they are aligned to. This provides you with an exciting, dynamic and supportive multi-disciplinary learning environment.

Graduate School

The Graduate School supports the postgraduate research (PGR) student community across Solent University. It provides an enriching learning environment for all research students, fostering intellectual and social interaction between graduates, supervisors, and collaborative partners from across the globe, as well as offering you access to all its avenues for communication and support. It also promotes a research culture that recognises the diversity of researchers' experiences and aspirations and will help you make the most of the resources and opportunities available to support your research, training, and academic development.

Our research themes

We have four research areas, led by passionate research academics:

  • Environment and Engineering: safe and sustainable energy, transport, and material systems.
  • Social Research and Policy: improving individual and community wellbeing through practice, provision, and policy.
  • Human Function and Health: The evaluation of human function, health and the social context.
  • Media, Culture and the Arts: communication, cultural and media studies, creative arts and practice

Studentships

We currently have an exciting fully funded PhD studentship opportunity to join our Centre for Marine Sustainability and work with our researchers on finding solutions to the global challenges facing our oceans. We are committed to widening participation in all levels of higher education.

Supervision

As a PGR student, you will be supported throughout your studies by a specialist supervision team formed of motivated, dedicated, and experienced academic staff. They will guide you through your research degree and ensure that your studies are underpinned by excellent pastoral and administrative support.
