Description

Entry Requirements

We are inviting applications for a PhD position focused on the development of porous materials for key challenges in decarbonization and thermal energy storage (TES).

This project aims to design and study advanced porous solids, such as MOFs, COFs, zeolites, carbonaceous materials, etc., for:

  • Selective CO₂ capture and separation from gas streams
  • Adsorption-based cooling and heat storage systems, such as adsorption chillers and thermochemical heat storage units
  • Structure–property–performance relationships governing gas uptake, heat storage capacity, and cycling stability

The research contributes to low-carbon energy systems, particularly in buildings, industrial heat recovery, and solar thermal applications.

Key Research Areas

  • Synthesis and functionalization of porous materials
  • Gas adsorption, heat of adsorption, and thermal cycling behaviour
  • Thermochemical and adsorption-based thermal energy storage
  • Materials characterization (BET, XRD, FTIR, TGA, SEM, etc.)
  • Potential collaboration with modelling or industrial partners

Candidate Requirements

We welcome applications from candidates with the following background:

  • Academic degree (BSc / MSc or equivalent) in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Energy, or related fields
  • Hands-on experience in porous material synthesis, characterization, and gas adsorption measurements is a strong plus
  • Demonstrated research motivation, effective communication skills, and the ability to work in an international, interdisciplinary team

What We Offer

  • Access to modern synthesis and adsorption characterization facilities
  • An interdisciplinary and international research environment
  • Professional development in research communication, data analysis, and project management

How to Apply

Please send the following documents as a single PDF to [email protected]:

  • Cover letter describing your motivation and suitability
  • CV with academic background and research experience
  • Academic transcripts
  • Contact details for two referees

Fees

Fully funded PhD studentship(UK/Home applicants). Outstanding international students may also be considered.
