At UCL, we’re pushing forward new discoveries in chemistry, and equipping the next generation of chemists to do the same. We are ranked 5th in the UK in the QS World University Rankings for Chemistry 2025.. With our strong reputation for chemistry research (ranked 3rd nationally in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021) and central London location – UCL offers the ideal environment in which to pursue master’s level study.
A chemistry master’s at UCL is also an excellent option for setting you apart in a commercial career. You’ll get to work with our globally-renowned researchers and build your own research capability to take with you into whatever area of industry you choose.
Our programmes:
Choose from one of six specialist MScs, to gain first-hand experience of research at the cutting-edge of chemistry, modelling and materials.
- MSc Applied Analytical Chemistry
Analytical chemistry underpins many important commercial enterprises, from jet engine development and food production, to areas like Earth sciences and forensics. On this MSc, you’ll learn to design, build and use analytical devices to tackle the challenges of this vast range of applications.
- MSc Chemical Research
This programme is ideal for those looking for hands-on scientific research training using the latest tools, methods and techniques. 50% of the master’s is your own intensive research project, with the other half giving you the knowledge and skills needed to complete it.
- MSc Materials for Energy and Environment
Interested in using your chemistry skills to address pressing energy and environmental challenges? This broad-based MSc will equip you with the materials chemistry skills to build new technologies in areas like energy storage, carbon capture and climate engineering.
- MSc Materials and Molecular Modelling
Our multidisciplinary MSc will equip you to use the simulation tools used in areas like catalysis, energy materials, nanotechnology and drug design, giving you a compelling set of transferable skills.
- MSc Organic Chemistry: Drug Discovery
This master’s is for students looking to specialise in organic chemistry for drug discovery. Studying the drug design process in depth, you’ll build the skills to be able to test and discover new medicines, making you a prime candidate for jobs in the pharma and biotech sectors.
- MSc Sustainable Chemistry
Taught at UCL East, this master’s combines multidisciplinary teaching with sustainable and green chemistry research. You’ll learn skills in chemical and biological molecular assembly, using methods that have low environmental impact.
